ArchiveDepression symptoms and health-related quality of life among patients with metastatic breast cancer in programme of palliative cancer care. Mon, 01/18/2010 - 21:52 Author / Source: Slovacek L, Slovackova B, Slanska I, Petera J, Priester P, Filip S, et al. Neoplasma 2009;56(6):467-472. Depression is seen in many cancer patients. It occurs in approximately 25% of palliative care patients. The quality of life term contains the information on an individual's physical social and spiritual condition. The study evaluated incidence and relevance of depression symptoms and level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with metastatic breast cancer in programme of palliative cancer care. This study was local prospective and cross-sectional. It was carried at Department of Clinical Oncology and Radiation Therapy of Charles University Hospital in Hrader Kralove, Czech Republic. A 4-week home-based aerobic and resistance exercise program during radiation therapy: a pilot randomized clinical trial. Mon, 01/18/2010 - 21:45 Author / Source: Mustian KM, Peppone L, Darling TV, Palesh O, Heckler CE, Morrow GR. J.Support.Oncol. 2009 Sep-Oct;7(5):158-167. During radiation therapy, cancer patients may report cancer-related fatigue (CRF), which impairs aerobic capacity, strength, muscle mass, and, ultimately, quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this pilot clinical trial was to examine the feasibility and initial efficacy of a home-based aerobic and progressive resistance exercise intervention for aerobic capacity, strength, muscle mass, CRF, and QOL. Daily steps walked (DSW), daily minutes of resistance exercise (MRE), and number of resistance exercise days (RED) were assessed to evaluate intervention adherence. Population differences in breast cancer: survey in indigenous African women reveals over-representation of triple-negative breast cancer. Mon, 01/18/2010 - 21:42 Author / Source: Huo D, Ikpatt F, Khramtsov A, Dangou JM, Nanda R, Dignam J, et al. J.Clin.Oncol. 2009 Sep 20;27(27):4515-4521. PURPOSE: Compared with white women, black women experience a disproportionate burden of aggressive breast cancer for reasons that remain unknown and understudied. In the first study of its kind, we determined the distribution of molecular subtypes of invasive breast tumors in indigenous black women in West Africa.
Nipple-sparing mastectomy: initial experience at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a comprehensive review of literature. Mon, 01/18/2010 - 21:38 Author / Source: Garcia-Etienne CA, Cody Iii HS,3rd, Disa JJ, Cordeiro P, Sacchini V. Breast J. 2009 Jul-Aug;15(4):440-449. Success achieved with skin-sparing mastectomy has led surgeons to reconsider the necessity of nipple-areola complex removal. This study reports our short- and mid-term postoperative outcomes with nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) and an updated review of reported literature. Data were retrospectively abstracted from medical records at our institution. Patients underwent NSM based on patient preference, oncologic criteria, and cosmesis. A literature review was undertaken through a PUBMED search and selected based on title and abstract relevance. Twenty-five patients underwent 42 NSMs at our institution from July 2000 to October 2005. Timing of breast cancer treatments with oocyte retrieval and embryo cryopreservation. Mon, 01/18/2010 - 21:25 Author / Source: Baynosa J, Westphal LM, Madrigrano A, Wapnir I. J.Am.Coll.Surg. 2009 Nov;209(5):603-607. BACKGROUND: Protecting future childbearing motivates young women with breast cancer to seek oocyte or embryo cryopreservation. Concerns about delays in cancer treatment may influence patients and practitioners considering these procedures. In this study, we compared timing of chemotherapy in women who underwent ovarian stimulation/oocyte retrieval (OR) and embryo cryopreservation with those who did not.

Mon, 01/18/2010 - 21:10 Author / Source: Alkner S, Bendahl PO, Ferno M, Nordenskjold B, Ryden L, South Swedish and South-East Swedish Breast Cancer,Groups. BACKGROUND: Adjuvant treatment with tamoxifen reduces the risk of contralateral breast cancer in hormone-responsive postmenopausal patients, whereas the effect in premenopausal women has not been fully elucidated. We have therefore studied the effect of tamoxifen on contralateral breast cancer in premenopausal women in a controlled randomised trial.
